Mobile App Performance Optimisation: What Slows Apps Down and How to Fix It

Mobile users are unforgiving about performance. An app that launches slowly, scrolls with visible jank, or drains the battery becomes an app that gets deleted. In a market where every competing app is one tap away, performance is a product quality issue - not just a technical one.

This guide covers the most common sources of mobile app performance problems and the specific techniques for addressing them in both Flutter and React Native applications.

The Performance Metrics That Matter

Before optimising, define what you are measuring. The mobile performance metrics that correlate most closely with user experience and retention are:

  • Cold launch time: Time from user tap to first interactive frame. Target: under 2 seconds on mid-range devices.
  • Frame rate / UI smoothness: 60 fps (or 120 fps on high refresh rate devices) is the target for all animations and scrolling. Drops below 60 fps are visible as jank.
  • Time to interactive for key screens: How long does it take from navigation to a screen for it to be populated and usable?
  • Memory usage: High memory consumption causes garbage collection pauses, background process kills, and crashes on low-memory devices.
  • Battery drain: Excessive background activity, sensor polling, or CPU usage drains battery faster than users expect, leading to uninstalls.
  • App size: Large app sizes (over 100MB) increase app store abandonment before installation. Excessive size after installation occupies device storage that users are sensitive about.

Slow Launch Time: Causes and Fixes

Launch time is the first performance impression. Every user experiences it on first install and after extended background periods. Common causes:

Heavy Work on the Main Thread at Launch

Synchronous database reads, synchronous network calls, heavy JSON parsing, or complex initialisation logic on the main thread before the first frame renders all increase launch time. Move all non-essential work off the launch critical path: load essential data needed for the first screen synchronously, defer everything else to background threads post-launch.

Large Initial Bundle or Asset Loading

In React Native, the JS bundle is loaded and parsed at launch. Large bundles (containing libraries that are not needed at launch) slow startup. Use lazy imports to defer loading of non-critical screens and libraries. In Flutter, avoid loading large assets synchronously during app initialisation.

Too Many Initialised SDKs

Every analytics, crash reporting, and marketing SDK you initialise at app launch adds latency. Audit the SDKs initialised synchronously in your app delegate or main.dart, and defer any SDK that does not need to be ready before the first screen renders.

Janky Scrolling: Causes and Fixes

Scroll jank is the single most common cause of negative mobile performance perception. The root cause is always the same: something is blocking the UI thread during a scroll frame.

Expensive Rendering in List Items

Complex list items with many nested components, heavy shadow effects, or expensive layout calculations force the rendering system to do significant work per frame. Optimise list item renders: reduce widget nesting depth, pre-compute expensive values outside the build method, and use const constructors in Flutter for static subtrees.

Missing List Virtualisation

Rendering every item in a list simultaneously, even those off-screen, creates unnecessary work. Use virtualised list components: FlatList / FlashList in React Native, ListView.builder or SliverList in Flutter. These render only the items currently visible (plus a small buffer), dramatically reducing the rendering work for long lists.

Image Loading on Scroll

Loading full-resolution, uncompressed images as they scroll into view causes frame drops. Use cached network image libraries (cached_network_image in Flutter, Fast Image in React Native), load appropriately sized images rather than full-resolution versions, and implement progressive image loading for large images.

Memory Issues: Causes and Fixes

Image Memory

Images are one of the largest sources of mobile memory consumption. Common mistakes: loading full-resolution images when a thumbnail is displayed, keeping large images in memory after navigating away from the screen that displayed them. Use image caching libraries that evict images from memory appropriately, and specify image dimensions so the framework does not decode larger images than needed.

Memory Leaks from Subscriptions and Listeners

Event listeners, stream subscriptions, and callbacks that are not cancelled when a component unmounts accumulate in memory. In Flutter, always cancel StreamSubscriptions in dispose(). In React Native, remove event listeners in useEffect cleanup functions. Use memory profiling tools to identify growing allocations over time.

Network Performance

  • Implement aggressive caching for data that does not change frequently - network round trips add latency that is felt as "slowness" even in an otherwise performant app
  • Use pagination for all list data - fetching 1000 items when 20 are visible is a common waste of bandwidth and memory
  • Compress API responses (gzip) and use efficient serialisation formats for high-volume data
  • Implement optimistic UI updates for user actions that will very likely succeed (like marking a task complete) - the app feels faster even if the network call is still in flight

Profiling Tools

Use the platform's built-in profiling tools to measure before and after any optimisation:

  • Flutter: Flutter DevTools (performance tab shows frame rendering timeline, memory tab shows allocations)
  • React Native: React DevTools Profiler, Systrace, Flipper
  • iOS: Instruments (Time Profiler, Allocations, Core Animation)
  • Android: Android Profiler in Android Studio

Never optimise without measurement. What feels like the bottleneck is often not the actual bottleneck. Profile first, then optimise the thing that profiling identifies as the actual constraint.

Mobile Performance at Savyasachi Infotech

At Savyasachi Infotech, mobile app performance is a first-class concern in every build - not an afterthought addressed after launch when users are already complaining. We apply performance profiling and optimisation techniques throughout development, with specific attention to launch time, scroll performance, memory usage, and network efficiency.

If you have an existing mobile app with performance problems, or you are building a new app and want performance built in from the start, talk to our team.

Performance Testing on Real Devices

Simulator and emulator performance does not reflect real device performance. Simulators run on desktop-class hardware with different memory, CPU, and GPU characteristics than mobile devices. Always performance-test on real devices - and specifically on the lower end of your target device range, not just the latest flagship. An app that runs smoothly on an iPhone 16 Pro Max may have significant performance problems on an iPhone 12 or a mid-range Android device. Your users do not all have the latest hardware; your performance standards should reflect the devices they actually use.

Is Your Mobile App Losing Users to Poor Performance? Let's Fix It.

Poor mobile performance is a retention killer. Users who experience slow launch times, janky scrolling, or excessive battery drain do not wait for the next update - they delete the app. The good news is that most mobile performance problems are diagnosable and fixable with the right profiling approach.

At Savyasachi Infotech, we profile, diagnose, and optimise mobile app performance for Flutter and React Native applications - identifying the actual bottlenecks and applying targeted fixes that deliver measurable improvements in the metrics that matter to users.
